Running the spelling checker

Unless you opted to hide spelling errors in notes, you can see where spelling errors are because they are underlined in red. To fix spelling errors, you can either right-click misspelled words and correct them one at a time or run the spelling checker to examine the spelling on a single page.

The spelling checker occasionally flags a word that is correctly spelled. You can ignore these words or add them to the spelling dictionary. Adding a word to the spelling dictionary instructs OneNote that the word is legitimate and should no longer be considered a misspelling.

Correct misspellings one at a time

  1. Right-click a misspelled word (a word underlined in red).

  2. In the shortcut menu that appears, choose the correct spelling of the word from the suggestions.

  3. Click or tap Ignore to disregard a word that OneNote presumes is incorrectly spelled but is actually a correct spelling.

  4. Click Delete Repeated Word to remove a repeated word (the spelling checker flags identical words that appear one after the other).

  5. Click Add To Dictionary to add a word to the dictionary so that OneNote no longer considers it a misspelling.

  6. Click Spelling to open the Spelling task pane and run the spelling checker on the entire page.

Try This

Type your last name in a note. If the spelling checker mistakes it for a misspelling, right-click your name, and then in the shortcut menu that appears, choose Add To Dictionary to add your name to the spelling dictionary so that it’s never flagged again.

Run the spelling checker

  1. Open the page on which you want to run the spelling checker.

  2. On the ribbon, click the Review tab.

  3. Click the Spelling button.

    The Spelling task pane opens.

  4. From the Suggestions list, choose the correct spelling and then click Change.

  5. Click tap Ignore to disregard a presumed misspelling.

  6. Click Add to add a word to the dictionary that is correctly spelled but mistaken for a misspelling (adding the word to the dictionary deems it a correctly spelled word).

  7. Click Delete to remove the second of two identical words (the Delete button appears in the Spelling task pane when the spelling checker encounters duplicate words).

  8. Click the Close button to close the Spelling task pane.

Tip

You can run a spelling check without going first to the Review tab and clicking the Spelling button by pressing F7.

Caution

The spelling checker can’t catch all misspellings. All it really does is call attention to words that aren’t in its built-in dictionary. In the sentence “Nero diddled while Rome burned,” for example, diddled is misspelled (the correct word is fiddled). But, because diddled is in its built-in dictionary, OneNote doesn’t flag the misspelling. You have to rely on your proofreading skills as well as the spelling checker to catch all misspellings.
