Finding the right word by using the Thesaurus

Sometimes it’s difficult to find a word that says exactly what you mean to say. If this happens to you, consider giving the Thesaurus a try.

The Thesaurus offers synonyms for any word you select, in a tidy list on the Thesaurus task pane. If you find the right word in the list of synonyms, you can insert it into your note and instantly replace your original word.

If the Thesaurus does not initially show you a synonym that you want to use, you can continue to search for more synonyms.

Find the right word by using the Thesaurus

  1. Drag to select a word.

  2. On the ribbon, click the Review tab.

  3. Click Thesaurus.

    The Thesaurus task pane opens on the right side of the screen.

  4. Click a word in the synonyms list to look for synonyms of that word. (You might do this if you don’t initially find the word that you are looking for.)

  5. Right-click a word in the synonyms list and choose Insert to replace the selected word with the synonym from the Thesaurus.

  6. Click Close on the Thesaurus task pane.

You can also open the Thesaurus by pressing Shift+F7.

Tip

You can also find a synonym for a word by using the Research task pane if it happens to be open. With the word for which you want to find a synonym selected, on the Services list, click Thesaurus.
