Time for action - creating a Question Bank

Many times we will want multiple competency exams, to reuse questions in multiple exams, or we may need to create different question banks for each competency test. The best way to do this is to create a category for each question bank and add your questions to the corresponding question bank.

  1. From the course home page, with editing turned on, go to the Course administration menu and select Question bank.
  2. From the drop-down menu select Categories from the Question Bank drop-down menu. You will be brought to the Edit categories page. Here you can edit existing categories or add new categories.
  3. To add a new category, go to the Add category section towards the bottom of the page.
  4. In the Parent category, select the parent category for the category you are creating. For this example we will select Top beneath the course we are working in. Then enter the name of the category and any category information.
  5. Once you are finished, click on Add category at the bottom of the page. You have now created a new category and will see it on the Edit categories page. See the following screenshot. The Competency Test is the category we created.

  6. Now let's add questions to the category we created. From the Course administration menu, select Questions from the Question bank drop-down menu. You will now be on the Question bank page. At the top of the page, select the category you would like to add questions to from the drop-down menu.
  7. Click Create a new question.... You will then be brought to the Choose a question type to add window and will follow the steps in the previous section to add questions to your question bank. Refer to the next screenshot for the Question bank page:

  8. Now we need to add our questions from the question bank we just created to our quiz. From the course home page, select the quiz you want to add the questions to. You will now see the Quiz administration menu in the Settings block. From the Quiz administration menu, select Edit Quiz.
  9. You should now be at the Editing quiz page as shown in the next screenshot. This is a very handy page. On the left, notice the Quiz administration menu. In the center you will see the questions already in your quiz and can rearrange or delete the questions as necessary. In the right column you will see the Question Bank contents block. This is where we will select the questions we want to add to the quiz. From the Select a category: drop-down menu, select the category you just created.

  10. Then in the Question section you will see all the questions in your category. To the left of the questions are checkboxes. Simply check the box next to the questions you wish to add to the quiz. Then from the With selected: menu at the bottom of the question list click Add to quiz.

What just happened?

We have now created a simple question bank and added the questions to a quiz. You can use question banks to create large pools of questions organized by topic or skill.

Have a go hero - creating other question types

Go back to your question bank and add a question of a type other than essay or multiple choice. How could you use another question type to evaluate an applicant's abilities?
