Setting Up Design Locking
Design element locking is a valuable tool made available with Domino/Notes 6. When enabled, design element locking ensures that designers cannot modify design elements concurrently (while other designers are modifying the same elements).
Two types of design locking are available: explicit locks and temporary locks. An explicit lock restricts alternate designers from opening design elements locked by other designers until they are released by the original designer (who originally locked the design element).
A temporary lock is the default lock placed on all design elements that are not explicitly locked by the designer modifying them. The benefit of a temporary lock is that if another designer opens the design element while it is being edited, he is warned that the design element is currently open. When the designer who has the design element open closes the element, the temporary lock is removed.
Before design elements can be locked, you must first follow these steps:
1. | A Master Lock Administration server must be specified in the Advanced panel of the database Access Control dialog. |
2. | Design element locking must be enabled for the current database. To do so, select Allow Design Locking on the Design tab of the Database Infobox. |
As soon as design locking is enabled, designers can explicitly lock design elements while they are working on them. The design elements stay locked until the designer releases them. To lock a design element, designers simply highlight the design element from the list of design elements in the Domino Designer client and select Design, Lock Design Element from the drop-down menu. Alternatively, designers can right-click on the design element and select Lock… from the drop-down menu. To unlock the design element, designers highlight the locked design element and select Design, Unlock Design Element from the drop-down menu, or right-click on the locked design element and select Unlock… from the drop-down menu.
