Creating Shared Data Connection Resources (DCRs)

A Data Connection Resource (DCR) is a design element new to Domino 6 that makes it very easy to integrate Domino applications with external data sources such as Microsoft SQL server and IBM DB2.

A data source must be configured on the server before you can create a DCR. For more information on configuring a data source on the server, see the Lotus Domino Administrator Help database (help6_admin.nsf).

To create a DCR, follow these steps:

1.
Open the database that will contain the DCR.

2.
In the Design Pane, select Shared Resources, Data Connections to display the list of existing DCRs.

3.
Click the New Data Connection button to open the Data Connection properties box, shown in Figure 9.13.

4.
Supply a name for the DCR.

5.
Choose the class of the connection. The default is RMDBS.

6.
Choose the connection type. Many databases have native drivers. When possible, use the native driver; otherwise, select a generic driver such as ODBC or OLE DB.

7.
(Optional) Supply a username and password to access the database.

8.
If required by the backend system, supply a database name.

9.
Choose the type of database object you want to access: table, view, or procedure.

10.
Supply the name of the table, view, or procedure that you wish to access. Click the Browse Metadata button to view a list of objects in the specified external database.

11.
(Optional) Configure other DCR settings.

Like other design resources, you can define a DCR and then use it in many places within an application, or use it in another application.
