Creating, Modifying, Troubleshooting Views for Web Clients

Views are a list of documents contained in the database and allow users access to those documents. Each database must have one view. Views do not have the same look or functionality on both Notes and Web clients. When a view is rendered to the Web, it is a full-screen display with default navigation buttons on the top and bottom of the screen. This is usually not an ideal look.

When designing for the Web you may want to consider displaying the view as a view applet, embedded view, or embedded view applet. Embedded views give you the added functionality of the element into which the view is embedded, such as a Form or Page. View applets display with more of the Notes view functionalities, such as selecting multiple documents and column resizing. These elements are discussed later in this chapter.

A few differences when displaying views on the Web include the following:

  • Private views are not supported.

  • View menu is not available on the Web; unchecking Show in View menu has no affect. To hide a view, use the Design Document property Hide design element from Web Browsers, or enclose the view name in parentheses (be aware this will also hide the view from Notes clients).

  • The Show Selection property is not supported with view applets, but is for views rendered as HTML.
