Introduction

The Lotus Notes/Domino 6 Application Development Exam Cram 2 is specifically designed to help you understand, take, and pass the three exams required to obtain a certification as an IBM Certified Application Developer—Lotus Notes and Domino 6. This book serves as a concise and focused study aid for people preparing for the three exams required to achieve this designation, rather than as a compendium of knowledge about Lotus Notes/Domino. The series reinforces and clarifies information with which the student should already be familiar, and is designed to help the student review and test on information that is likely to be on the exams. Although the series attempts to be a comprehensive testing resource, it is not designed to be a single source for student preparation. Instead, it works hand-in-hand with real-world experience, hands-on practice, and other study guides.

Taking a Certification Exam

To schedule and take any of the exams outlined within this book, you must register with an approved testing vendor. The available vendors are:

Arriving at the Exam Site

Be sure to arrive at the exam site 15 minutes early. No matter what your scheduled time to take the exam may be, the clock does not begin until you initiate the start of the exam. You need a photo ID to present prior to entering the exam room. You are not permitted to bring anything into the exam room, although scratch paper and a pencil are provided.

Be sure to review the Cram Sheet prior to entering the exam room as well. That will reinforce key topics that you are likely to see on the exam. The Cram Sheet contains distilled, key facts about the IBM Certified Application Developer—Lotus Notes and Domino 6 exams. Review this information last thing before entering the test room, paying special attention to those areas where you feel you need the most review.

In the Exam Room

Most likely, there will be other terminals in the same room as you and you may have other test takers testing simultaneously (most likely another certification). Try to ignore their presence and focus on your exam. When entering the room, you are likely to have a choice of which terminal to use. Try to give yourself as much room as possible from other test takers. If you are fortunate enough to take the exam when no one else is in the room, you should take the opportunity to speak out loud when reading the questions. You may find it easier to concentrate and understand the questions if you recite the questions as you read them.

Most importantly, you need to relax, stay calm, and simply answer the questions as best you can. You will have plenty of time to complete the exam, so there is no reason to become anxious about how much time remains. If you don't know the answer to a question, reread the question. If the question is still unclear, simply mark the question and return to it later. The easiest and most difficult questions are mixed randomly throughout the exam. Often, reading later questions may help you answer a previous question. Regardless, you will want to use whatever time you can to complete the entire exam. Missing one or two of the more difficult questions is common and won't cause you to fail the exam.

After you have completed the exam, your score is computed immediately and displayed on the screen. One copy is printed automatically and will be waiting for you outside the exam room. You can have multiple copies printed (and stamped for authenticity) upon request.

If you do happen to fail (or stated in a more politically correct way, your score does not reach the minimum required score), there is no required grace period before you can take the test again. As soon as you can schedule the next exam, you can try again (as early as the next day!). Of course, taking the exams is expensive and takes time. Using this book will help ensure that you pass the tests the first time. Regardless of whether you pass or fail, you can schedule and take the exams in any order. Ideally, because the exams are structured to build upon the previous exams, it may prove to be beneficial to take the exams in the order that was intended.

How to Prepare for an Exam

Begin by studying the material that relates to the test for which you are preparing. It also helps tremendously for you to get as much hands-on experience with the concepts as possible. When you feel that you have grasped the concepts, take the practice tests in this book. After you have mastered this material, you should schedule the exam you have been preparing for and use the book as a final review to ensure that you have retained the information.

Nothing is more useful than hands-on experience. You should have already been working with the Notes Designer Client for some time prior to picking up this book. As you work through the sections of this book, try the commands and follow along with the screen shots included in this book. That will help you better understand the topics being discussed and reinforce the material as you review it.

Classroom training and computer training are extremely helpful in preparing for these exams. Classroom training can be expensive, but if you can participate, it is certainly worth the time and expense. Nevertheless, you can easily pass the exams outlined in this book without taking classroom training or computer training.

Naturally, you can find a wealth of information about the topics tested on these exams on the Internet and in other publications. Many of the available resources are located at the end of each chapter in the “Need to Know More?” section.
