Chapter 11
Introduction to
ZBrush
This chapter introduces the features of ZBrush that can be used for
sculpting your mesh. It also discusses the advantages of using
ZBrush in conjunction with your 3D package for mesh refinement
and general workflow so that you can enjoy the benefits of painting
displacement maps with real-time sculpting. The tools and proce-
dures presented here for the most part pertain to ZBrush 2;
however, toward the end of the chapter we’ll discuss the new fea-
tures of ZBrush 3. This chapter does not cover painting textures
and 2D, 2.5D tools, or general workflow.
What ZBrush Is
The first thing to point out about ZBrush 2 is that it is 2D, 2.5D, and
3D software, all in one package. ZBrush stores depth information
when you paint on the canvas in what is called “pixols,” which are
pixels with depth. Let’s see how it works.
When you are painting with a brush or 3D object, notice that
when you paint over existing strokes or paint slowly, the depth of
the brushstroke increases. In Figure 11-1, notice the horizontal
brushstroke has much more depth than the noisy textured
background.
