With the polygons still selected, scale down a little bit and extrude
up two or more times.
The Ear
For the female ear we start by modeling from the n-gon of the ear
hole. This method is different from and a bit more complicated than
the method shown in Chapter 5 because it requires more practice
and planning of the ear structure and the line flow.
To start the ear modeling process, we cap the hole of the ear,
then extrude the polygon up and scale it down.

Weld the target vertices and extrude again. Then cut the marked
edges for finer control and continuity of the back of the head.
The ear now looks closer to its final shape, but if we subdivide the
whole mesh it will produce undesirable results because the ear
shape is a big n-gon without edges to hold the tension.
We need to start cutting the n-gon and define the general structure
of the ear flow.

Then we pull and push the vertices so the ear volume conforms to
our reference and cut some more edges to improve the control.
Scale up the marked edges to get a rounder shape, and then extrude
the marked polygons back.
Finishing this step establishes the base for the anti-helix.

Now we need to add more control to define the anti-helix, helix,
scapha, and tragus.
Keep an eye on the edges while you’re cutting to make sure every-
thing stays quad and so the subdivision process runs smoothly.
We define the anti-helix structure and then remove the dashed lines
to avoid triangle polygons. Even if the ear doesn’t have much defor-
mation, avoiding triangles can prevent undesired artifacts.

Move the marked vertices, and the ear approximates to the final
shape.
Push to make the volume a bit more precise while cutting the
marked areas in order to hold the tension.
Select the marked polygon to extrude in and create the ear hole.
