Chapter 5

How to Work with Styles

Saving Time Stylishly

In the last chapter intro I spoke about my love of type. I talked about how I sat and did everything manually, over and over again. The beauty of styles in InDesign, and in fact, in any of the Adobe apps where type is used, is that you can define set styles for your type to ensure uniformity across your characters and paragraphs. Being able to set all your style guides for documents means you can create and save multiple styles for all documents, all projects, and all clients. You can also do the same for objects—frames, shapes, and images—in InDesign. It requires you to put in some effort at the start, but over the course of creating multiple documents you’ll definitely reap the benefits of this powerful, time-saving feature. I’ll hold my hand up; there’s been many a time when I have had to do a quick and dirty job, jumping in and creating content with careless abandonment and ignoring styles. But man, when I have to go back to that job and edit or create additional content without my styles set up . . . well, I could take myself down one of those shady looking alleyways from a seedy ’70s cop show and duff myself up and leave myself in a dumpster. What’s with all this law enforcement, ’70s cop show, and espionage talk in my chapter intros you wonder? Okay, I admit, I wanted to be either Starsky or Napoleon Solo growing up. Who wouldn’t want a friend called Huggy Bear or Illya Kuryakin (try saying that, let alone spelling it correctly!)? Mike Kubeisy, a fellow Photoshop World instructor and friend of KelbyOne, works as the chief photographer on the show NCIS. He gets to work with David McCallum (Illya Kuryakin) and says he’s a very nice chap. I am glad he is. He was a blooming great spy for U.N.C.L.E.!
