Create a Tint of a Color?

image

Creating a tint of a color (a percentage of that original color) is super easy. Select the color you want to work with in the Swatches panel, and then click on the arrow to the right of the Tint field at the top of the panel to open a slider. Move the slider from 100% to a lower number to create a tint of the selected color. To avoid losing this tint (as you may want to take the slider back to 100% to use the original color), you have to save it as its own swatch. Once the Tint slider is at the percentage you need, click on the New Swatch icon at the bottom of the Swatches panel, and the new tint will be saved as a totally new and separate color swatch. The catch is that this tint swatch is linked to the original color swatch, so if you change the color of the original swatch, the tint will adjust to that new color as well. And if you delete the original color, the tint will also be deleted. To prevent this from happening, Right-click on your tint swatch and select New Color Swatch. Make sure everything looks good in the New Color Swatch dialog and click OK. This will create a new independent swatch with the color values of the tint, which means if you modify or delete the original swatch, this independent tint swatch will not be affected.
