Create a Custom Shape with the Pen Tool?

image

If you know your way around the Pen Tool (one of the most difficult tools in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to master), you can use it to create your own shapes. I’d say this tip is for the slightly more Pen Tool–experienced person, but feel free to experiment with it to help you understand how it is used. More often than not, you’ll be using the basic shapes in your InDesign document. But if you have to create something bespoke, you may want to try this out. Select the Pen Tool (P) and click on your document to make your first point. You can make a straight-sided shape quite easily by just clicking again on the location where you want to plant your next point, and so on. Make sure that you close your shape by clicking back on the first point you planted. If you are more experienced with the Pen Tool, you can create curves in your shape, but this requires way more detailed instructions than I can fit on a page (the Pen Tool could fill an entire book itself!). I strongly suggest you find some great Pen Tool tutorials on sites such as KelbyOne.com.
